Coffee Kids
Helping Coffee Farming Communities Improve Their Quality Of Life
It wasn't so long ago that coffee farmers faced a bleak future. We knew that by supporting the Fairtrade and organic movements we would begin to see improvements in these communities – but we wanted to do more
When we discovered Coffee Kids charity, founded in 1988 by Bill Fishbein, we felt that it offered a real chance for these impoverished communities. Coffee Kids was created as a way for coffee businesses and coffee consumers to give something back to the families who grow coffee.
We helped to set up the UK arm of the charity in 1998 and since then Percol's customers have helped us to make a total donation in excess of US$380,000 to Coffee Kids. The funds have supported a variety of great projects, some of which can be seen below.
Through Coffee Kids, we can help small-scale coffee farmers address their own communities’ problems by focusing on 4 main areas: health, education, food security and economic diversification. The charity’s enterprise projects help provide farmers and their families with alternative sources of income so they are no longer totally dependent upon selling coffee to support themselves. For many communities in Latin America coffee farming is the only source of income and when there is no crop to sell, there is no income.
Coffee Kids supports 22 projects with 14 partners in five coffee-growing Latin American countries. The projects respect the cultural integrity of local communities, foster independence and promote long-term self-sufficiency.
Percol’s support of Coffee Kids charity is driven by a desire to help to ensure a sustainable future for small scale coffee communities and therefore great quality coffee for years to come.
