Percol School Project
Buh is a small community in the Tubah District in North West Cameroon with a population of approximately 1800.
The current situation in Buh
Around 400 children in Buh are of school age. The village has had a school since 2003, but it’s in a sorry state – ramshackle, overcrowded under equipped and not at all fit for purpose. A shack would be the height of luxury by comparison.
Can you imagine having to sit in a classroom that is totally exposed to the elements because the walls have caved in – and now the roof threatens to fall on your head. Not only that, but there are insects that burrow under your skin and the drinking water could cause serious illness. It’s little wonder that worried parents keep their children away from school – especially in the rainy season.
Education in Africa is the key to survival and if the kids don’t show up for lessons, they could end up rapidly spiralling down into a life of despair and danger.
How Percol hopes to help
For the schoolchildren in Buh this project has not come a moment too soon.
Building work is scheduled for Autumn 2008. In order for the work to begin on time, it is vital that we achieve our target of £10,000.
Three classrooms and a toilet block will be built. Proper hygiene will mean that many illnesses, such as dysentery, will be stopped in their tracks. The classrooms will be furnished with benches, blackboards, chairs and all basic teaching materials. And a proper drinking water supply will be laid on – together with a first aid kit. Remember, Buh does not have a local GP, and the villagers face terrible health hazards every day.
Our aim is to provide effective education where pupils can enjoy learning in a comfortable, healthy and less crowded environment.
The Buh community will be totally committed to building the school
The local partner to Schools for Africa (www.schoolsforafrica.co.uk) in Cameroon will oversee the project, keeping a check on prices and progress. They ensure villagers demonstrate their commitment to the project by pledging their support in terms of providing labour. The pledge is a formal document that is signed by all parties.
