Coffee is the new Tea!

30th August 2006

Nowhere else has borne witness to the transformation from tea to coffee more acutely than here in the UK which has always been a stronghold for tea consumption.

Recent years have witnessed an explosion in demand for coffee. This has seen coffee vastly outstrip tea in consumption. The boom in demand has meant that production has increased dramatically; the weight of coffee produced in Brazil is now twice the weight of tea produced in India.

In 1998 expenditure on coffee in Britain for the first time overtook the amount spent on tea. Long gone are tea shops with net curtains manned by dinner ladies. In have come sleek stylish coffee shops with an army of young Mediterranean's to sculpt the customers precise preference for the optimum experience. We may lag behind the Swedes in our coffee consumption who have the highest per head intake but this is not through want of trying!
