Coffee cuts heart risk
23rd February 2007
Drinking tea and coffee everyday can slash the risk of heart disease among older people, it is claimed.
The caffeine is said to induce a “healthy” rise in blood pressure that counteracts a drop after a meal-something that becomes more pronounced as people age.
A study at the City University of New York shows that people who drink four or more caffeinated drinks daily have a 53% lower risk of death from heart disease, compared with those who drink less than half a cup a day. But the proactive effect was not seen in people with very high blood pressure or those under 65.
However, other studies have shown that drinking just a cup of coffee could kill you within an hour if you are at risk from heart disease.
