FOOD BRANDS GROUP GETS A BIG TICK FOR ITS SUPPORT OF THE COFFEE COMMUNITIES

10th July 2007

Battersea based Food Brands Group has been awarded, for the fifth year running, the Big Tick “Business in the Community” Award for Percol’s work with Grounds for Hope, Coffee Kids Charity (Coffee Kids). Funds are raised for the charity through sales on Percol instant and ground coffee. The Big Tick is awarded by Business in the Community to companies who are able to demonstrate an impact in the local community, the environment, the workplace or the marketplace.

Percol, who has been awarded a Big Tick in the Cause Related Marketing Category, is the primary sponsor and supporter of the Coffee Kids in the UK since it pledged its support nine years ago. In that time the company has raised over £200,000 for the charity. This year Percol pledged to give an extra 25p from each pack sold to the charity.
Brian Chapman, Founder, Food Brands Group said; “We are passionate about adventures in coffee and are delighted that yet again we have been recognised for efforts with Grounds for Hope. We are passionate about helping to improve the lives of those dependent on coffee farming. Projects include education, health-care and developing alternative sources of income.’
Percol set up the UK arm of the charity in 1998 because they wanted to be able to give help when it was most needed - at the times when the coffee farmers had no coffee to sell and whole communities suffered immense hardship - especially the children.
Coffee Kids is an international non-profit organisation established to help coffee farming families improve the quality of their lives. It currently helps over 100 communities in Mexico and Central America, through supporting education, health-care, training, and micro credit programmes for coffee farmers and their families.
Coffee is the second most highly traded commodity after oil. 125 million people rely on coffee as their only source of income to feed their families, to provide healthcare for their children and send them to school.

Percol has already contributed to projects in Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico and Nicaragua through sales of the multi-award winning coffees. This year’s 25p contribution will go directly to a children’s educational project in Jinotega, Nicaragua working with 300 children. For more details visit www.coffeekids.org
